Monday state and local news

Governor Greg Abbott, Lt. Governor Dan Patrick and Attorney General Ken Paxton are all showing increases in support according to a new UT Tyler-Dallas Morning News Poll released this morning. Dr. Mark Owens, assistant political science professor at UT Tyler, is one of the authors of that poll. He says Abbott’s campaign ads attacking Beto O’Rourke are increasing Abbott’s lead in this latest poll.

“It’s within the margin of error compared to what we asked in August. Right now, his lead is 9% compared to where it had been at 7% a month ago.. Our polling started after Labor Day weekend. We interviewed over 1,200 individuals. And they’re just showing us .. that the campaigns are beginning. In particular, Governor Abbott has been more active on the campaign trail than Beto O’Rourke in regard to TV advertisements. And that’s increased his lead by two percent.”

Amtrak’s Texas Eagle train will be running again this week between Marshall, Longview and Mineola, but there’s concern that the deal that averted a national railroad strike last week might fall apart. Rail workers are set to vote on the tentative deal reached between unions and railroads Thursday morning. If any of the 12 rail unions fail to ratify a new contract, nearly 125,000 rail workers could strike.

A 50-yard field goal .. just as time expired, allowed the Dallas Cowboys beat the Cincinnati Bengals 20-17 yesterday after losing a two-touchdown halftime lead. The Cowboys stopped the Bengals with about a minute remaining, Cooper Rush got the Cowboys in range for Brett Maher to help Dallas win for the second time in Rush’s two career starts filling in for an injured Dak Prescott.
