Friday state and local news

Several East Texas students who allegedly made threats against their schools are now facing criminal charges. The most recent incident happened Wednesday when a Grand Saline middle school student is said to have made threatening comments. The day before, a Quitman ISD student reportedly threatened to bring a gun to school. And the week began with two Longview-area students facing charges related to alleged threats involving firearms. Cushing ISD Superintendent Brandon Enos told CBS19 the students don’t realize that those kinds of incidents can result in everything from suspension or removal to an alternate school to a felony conviction.

The 106th East Texas State Fair Opens today with Summer-like temperatures on this second day of Fall. The old favorites like the sea lions, livestock, rides and fair food will be there. And Fair President and CEO, John Sykes says there are some new additions as well this year.

“We have a professional hypnotist, a comedy hypnotist, coming in to perform two or three times a day; and we have the jet pack water circus. In other words we’re going to put a giant swimming pool, fill it full of water and you’ve seen it before where jets are powering people flying overhead and what have you. I have no idea how many people are going to get wet from the spray (everybody). So what, that along will be worth in coming.”

The East Texas State Fair runs everyday until October 2’nd. Hear the full interview with East Texas State Fair CEO John Sykes.
