Thursday state and local news

Police in Houston have alerted authorities across the state to be on the lookout for Daniel Chacon. He’s an ex-boyfriend who’s accused of killing 38-year-old Maira Gutierrez Monday after a domestic violence incident. She had been kidnapped and was then shot to death.

Texas has seen 3 times the number of family violence deaths since 2017 with rates of family violence rising statewide. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and in East Texas, there are much needed services that rely on public support to operate. Counselor Ana Barnson of the East Texas Crisis Center talks about the clients they serve.

“Last year we served 923 victims in the five counties that we service. We serve Henderson, Van Zandt, Rains, Wood and of course, Smith County. The majority of sources are related with legal assistance, trying to assist them with therapy services and of course with financial needs and housing needs.”
